Born in 1953, Teresa Teng brought joy to her family. With humble surroundings and the sound of her singing, she added vibrant colors to the poor and lonely life of her family, like a bright note that moved around her parents and siblings. As the only girl in the family, she was dearly loved. It was a poor but self-sufficient family, living their own happy life. Teresa Teng was born in Yunlin County in southern Taiwan, a place filled with the charm of the south—banana breezes, coconut rains, and the fragrance of the earth. Her father, Deng Ju, was an officer who followed the Kuomintang to Taiwan. His ancestral home was in Hebei, and he held a low military rank. The family left their homeland and lived in poverty. In the 1950s, Taiwan was still poor, and listening to the radio was the main form of entertainment for ordinary families. Teresa Teng was such a "loyal listener" to the radio, and learning to sing along with the radio was her greatest joy at the time. She often visited her godmother's house because there was a radio she loved, and her mother and godmother became her loyal listeners. In the radio broadcasts, she found her connection with music. On a day with light drizzle, the air was filled with the coolness and moisture of the rain. That day, a young girl sang The Ethereal Song by Zhou Xuan alone. She didn't know what sorrow was, just singing softly along with the lingering and gentle melody, endlessly. She didn't even know that this was the song Zhou Xuan sang in the movie Dong Xiaowan, nor that at that moment, a man in his fifties had been standing silently by her family's fence for a long time. His black umbrella and silver-gray suit lingered like a cloud in front of her house. A girl and a spring rain, a rainy day and a song—these became the beginning of her lifelong connection with music. Everything was fate. Because of an accidental humming, Teresa Teng was heard by her mentor Chang Yunchun, who, like a discovering a, was so moved and enchanted by her singing that he eagerly ran to her parents' house, asking for permission to teach her. And so, the story of Visiting Yingtai began. Teresa Teng started with folk songs and traditional opera. Her graceful voice and charming appearance were unforgettable. In 1963, when director Li Hanshang's film Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai was released in Taiwan, it sparked a craze for Huangmei tunes in Taiwan at the time. When the "China Radio" held a Huangmei tune competition, her mentor Chang Yunchun decided to sign her up without her parents' consent. That year, her father was not very enthusiastic about it, thinking her singing was just for fun. How could he know her deep love for music. As Teresa Teng passed through each round, her voice surpassed her elders', she outshone the competition, and won the championship in the final. Her father was then overjoyed. After winning the Huangmei tune competition, Teresa Teng had more opportunities to perform on stage. In schools, among relatives and neighbors, her desire to perform was fully displayed, and she received warm applause. Teresa Teng was the "poor joy" of the family, and from the age of nine, she traveled with her father's comrade and her mentor, Li Chengqing, to perform for free, supplementing the family income with meager compensation.
