The Adventures of Nils tells the story of a boy with extraordinary experiences. His home is in Sweden, and his name is Nils. Because he teased a sprite, he was punished and transformed by the sprite's magic into a tiny creature no bigger than a thumb. He then embarks on an adventurous life across his homeland, riding on his family's white goose, Morten, and a flock of migrating geese.
Along the way, Nils uses his wit and, with the help of others, overcomes one challenge after another. He makes the cunning fox suffer greatly, is kidnapped by a gang of crows but manages to escape, stays as a guest in the beautiful garden of a ghost, and even makes friends with a fierce-looking bear.
Through these adventures, Nils gradually matures, transforming from the mischievous and playful child he once was into a kind, responsible, and helpful true gentleman. In the end, when Nils returns to his home after a long absence, he is delighted to discover that he has reverted to his original form.
