Through such reading, children can familiarize themselves with Chinese culture and classic works in a manner during their childhood, which will greatly help them appreciate the spirit and style of Chinese culture, gain wisdom, and improve their qualities. May children embark on a wonderful and solemn spiritual journey through dialogue with culture.
In the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty 300 years ago, a scholar named Li Yufang (1662-1722) wrote "The Text for Educating the Young." Its content was derived from a sentence by Confucius in the Confucian classic "The Analects." The original sentence was: "Students, when at home be filial, when abroad be respectful of elders; be careful in your speech and trustworthy in your actions; love all people and be close to the good; if you have any energy left after these, then study literature." The author divided the meaning of this sentence into five parts and elaborated on it in a three-character-per-line, two-line-per-verse format, compiling it into a book. Later, this book was revised and adapted by Jia Cunren of the Qing Dynasty and renamed "The Rules for Students."
"The Rules for Students" is an enlightenment book that guides children's learning and moral education in the form of a learning regulation. The three-character sentences are easy to remember and recite, and it teaches the most important principles of how to be a person. The entire book is structured around the Confucian ideals of loyalty and filial piety in traditional Chinese culture, explaining in turn how to treat parents, siblings, and elders, how to conduct oneself in society, how to study and cultivate one's character, and the etiquette and norms of family and life education. It particularly emphasizes family education and life education.
In "The Rules for Students," "students" refers to learners, which can be broadly understood as children in families; in a broader sense, students can be seen as everyone. "Rules" means norms, principles, or the of how one should act as a person, the standards one should follow. In summary, it teaches people how to be a good person, a filial parent, a polite person, and a person who loves learning. Many traditional virtues in "The Rules for Students," such as filial piety to parents, caring for siblings, respecting teachers, being honest and trustworthy, and diligent learning, play a significant role in promoting harmonious family relationships, optimizing the social environment, improving humanistic qualities, and cultivating etiquette and morality. Although it contains some feudal remnants, it is richer in nourishment.
