Features: Waterhouse (1849-1917): A Pre-Raphaelite painter. Born in Italy, his father was a painter of the Victorian era in Britain, and both his mother and aunt had a deep understanding of art. In his early years, he benefited from the influence of the Dutch painter Alma-Tadema in the academic education of the late 19th century, showing great interest in Eastern mysticism, religion, and customs. At his first exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, he was accepted with a series of paintings on Eastern themes. His paintings are known for their elegance and are rich in Romantic qualities. Drawing nourishment from classical mythology of ancient Greece and Rome, he created works with a medieval dreamlike mysticism and religious sentiment. Waterhouse's paintings made unique contributions to the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and his brilliant painting techniques earned him fame in the British art world at the time.
Waterhouse's early works mostly lacked storytelling, focusing primarily on portraits. However, due to his exceptional skill and religious themes, these paintings attracted buyers, often being privately collected and bringing substantial income to the young artist. During this period, his favorite model was his sister, whose image appeared in several of his works.
