Clearly, their Mr. Keed had run into an old friend. The group liked Mr. Keed very much—he was tall, dark-faced, and carried himself with the air of a true gentleman, able to cheer everyone up when mediating disputes. His friend, however, was quite grotesque. He was almost as tall as Keed but much fatter, and his appearance was far worse, just like the kind of characters often depicted in books.
