Pelvic 1.5cm fluid, is it serious? How to treat it

Patient's question:

Yesterday my period ended, and today's ultrasound showed a liquid dark area with a of 1.5 cm in the uterosacral fossa. However, I don't have any obvious discomfort, and my period is quite regular... Could this be serious? Am I suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease? What is the best way to treat it??

Doctor's answer:

Pelvic effusion of 1.5 cm is considered significant, classified as pathological effusion. It is mostly caused by inflammation, specifically due to chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, but it can also be triggered by a few cases of ectopic pregnancy rupture, corpus luteum rupture, pelvic abscess, chocolate cyst, or ovarian cancer. Timely treatment is required.
If there are no other symptoms, it is recommended to closely monitor the condition and undergo a follow-up ultrasound after the next menstrual period. If the examination results are abnormal, treatment for the underlying condition should be initiated to achieve better outcomes.
