Is frequent leukorrhea a sexually transmitted disease?

Patient's question:

The discharge is like bean curd but odorless. Could it be a sexually transmitted disease? Please advise the experts.

Doctor's answer:

Hello: This resembles the symptoms of candidal vulvovaginitis. A wet mount examination can be performed for confirmation. The most common symptoms of candidal vulvovaginitis are vulvar itching and a significant increase in vaginal discharge. The itching in patients can vary in intensity and occur intermittently. The vulvar itching caused by candidal vulvovaginitis is generally more pronounced than that caused by trichomoniasis. Severe itching can make it difficult for patients to sit or lie down, causing restlessness and disturbed sleep and appetite. Patients may also experience a burning sensation in the vagina, which is particularly noticeable during urination. In more severe cases, symptoms such as frequent urination, dysuria, and dyspareunia may also occur. An increased amount of vaginal discharge is another major symptom of this condition. The discharge is usually thick and may be white or yellow, or it may be thin. The typical discharge of candidal vulvovaginitis is curd-like or cottage cheese-like, or appears as creamy clumps. During gynecological examination: Depending on the severity of the condition, the labia minora and vaginal mucosa may show varying degrees of congestion and edema of the labia minora. The vagina may contain a significant amount of thick white discharge, or the vaginal mucosa may be covered with a white membrane. When the membrane is removed, the exposed mucosa appears red, swollen, and eroded, or may have superficial ulcers.
