The book is divided into 10 chapters.
Chapter 1: Location Environment and Location Competitiveness, mainly compares and examines two aspects. Additionally, it compares the location environment and location competitiveness of Shanghai with those of Tianjin and Hankou, further demonstrating the potential and foundational role of locational competitiveness in the formation of modern Shanghai's urban comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 2: Modern Shanghai's Urban Institutional Environment and the Fluctuation of Comprehensive Competitiveness, primarily explores the institutional competitiveness centered around the institutional characteristics of modern Shanghai's "dual political system." By analyzing the evolution of the national institutional environment and the emergence of the special institutional environment of the concessions, it reveals the integration of Shanghai's overall institutional environment under the effect of the concessions, the superior position of modern Shanghai's urban institutional environment in the country, and the objective role of the institutional competitiveness formed in enhancing Shanghai's urban comprehensive competitiveness.

It is precisely due to the integration of internal and external trade and the resulting market network that modern Shanghai's urban economy has achieved significant competitiveness, which plays a very important role in the formation of modern Shanghai's urban comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 7: Modern Shanghai's Urban Consumption Function and Comprehensive Competitiveness, analyzes the urban consumption market and its contribution to urban competitiveness from the perspective of urban consumption demand, the consumption market constructed by urban commercial mechanisms, and the consumption environment created by urban services, as well as the special consumption market formed by urban real estate industry. It points out that the formation of modern Shanghai's urban comprehensive competitiveness is a historical process, and urban comprehensive competitiveness is not only the economic strength of the city but also includes the social environment, institutional factors, humanistic factors, and the comprehensive management level and capabilities of the city. The purpose of this book is to attempt to examine once again why modern Shanghai became the largest commercial port and industrial and commercial city in modern China from a specific perspective and method. It also hopes to promote the study of Shanghai's urban history and economic history, achieving certain methodological innovation and breakthroughs.
