The River Bleeds tells the story of a young man's search for family love during his coming-of-age. The novel follows the main character, Lu Baoliang, as he searches for his sister, who ran away with her lover. It depicts the dramatic rise and fall of the fate of a family over several decades. Lu Baoliang had a happy childhood. His father was the captain of the criminal investigation team at the public security bureau, and both his mother and sister, Baozhen, deeply loved him. However, everything changed due to his sister's love affair. The object of her affection was Quan Hu, the son of her father's sworn brother, Quan Li. This seemingly well-matched match was strongly opposed by her father, and the couple ultimately chose to flee. On the 55th birthday of Quan Li, his sister and Quan Hu returned to their hometown with their newborn son. On the same day, Quan Li and his subordinates were arrested by the public security bureau for suspected illegal fundraising and organized crime. Quan Li was sentenced to death, while Quan Hu and Baozhen were released and disappeared.
In his search for his sister, Lu Baoliang encountered various emotional dilemmas and life dangers, experiencing repeated hardships before finally finding her. However, by then, she had passed away due to an incurable illness. Baoliang had no choice but to return to his hometown with his sister's son, Lei Lei.
At the age of thirteen, he discovered that his seemingly well-known home was filled with secrets. He clearly saw his sister embracing Quan Hu, their lips locked in a kiss. But his father firmly opposed the relationship. At the critical moment when the arrest operation was unavoidable, his sister appeared between her father and her uncle, carrying the child she shouldn't have had. The daughter brought by Aunt Yang was in constant conflict with Baoliang—one would burst into tears, while the other would glow with anger. In the blink of an eye, Baoliang turned back, momentarily blinded by a bright light. A moment later, he realized that several police officers had entered the room.
In the department head's office, the department head announced to Baoliang the decision by the provincial public security academy to expel him from school. Baoliang vividly recalled the moment when Quan Hu raised his gun at him three times. His decisive action in identifying the photo surprised Detective Jin. Suddenly, he pushed Feifei away, noticing a man standing at the door of the bedroom.
When you see a simple face, clear eyes, and a bright smile, don't assume that these seemingly real things are all genuine. Don't let this inspire romantic fantasies, because everything may just be an illusion. The selfishness and schemes hidden behind these appearances are far more dirty than we imagine.
