Through the life of an eunuch, the book reveals the intertwining joys and sorrows of life. In a flowing narrative like clouds and water, it pours deep sympathy for the hardworking masses, moving readers to tears.
A fifth-rank official eunuch, personally granted an imperial name by Empress Dowager Cixi: married a wife, engaged in business, and even called brothers with gangsters and bandits; incredibly clever, daring to compete in wit with Zhang Zhidong; deeply compassionate and loyal, helping each other with a needlewoman who made embroidery in the palace. This book tells the old story of an eunuch and a girl who married him. "Xia Yitiao" can only be considered an ordinary eunuch. He knew a bit of martial arts, could cook, had friends like "Yangbangzi," and even saw a bandit who claimed to rape Empress Dowager Cixi, but he didn’t have the wealth of "Little De Zhang" or the legendary status of Kou Liancai. If there’s anything special about him, it’s that a girl actually married him. And this marriage lasted through decades of storms and winds.
Sa Su’s "Old Beijing Storytelling Series" is humorous and engaging, with vivid legendary tales that leave readers laughing.
