Why do people get Acute Fatty Liver Disease during Pregnancy

Patient's question:

My sister is a very obedient child, but for some unknown reason or illness, she has rarely called home since entering the workforce. When I call her, she's often dismissive. At the age of 19, she has been with several boyfriends. Last year, a boy from Sichuan came to our home with her, saying they wanted to get married. We didn't agree at the time, but my sister claimed she was pregnant with his child, so we had no choice but to let it happen. However, when she went to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said she had acute fatty liver during pregnancy.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, in the early stages of the illness, there is only persistent nausea, vomiting, fatigue, upper abdominal pain, or headache. Jaundice appears within several days to a week and progressively worsens, often without itching. The abdominal pain can be localized to the right upper abdomen or be diffuse. Hypertension, proteinuria, and edema are common, while a few people may experience transient polyuria and polydipsia. If delivery does not occur, the condition may continue to progress, leading to coagulation dysfunction. Don't worry too much—generally, a few days of treatment in the hospital will improve the condition. It's advisable to eat less fried food and get more rest.
