English Guide for Going to the United States

Author: Li Yang, Li Yi, and others
Publisher:
Publish Date: 1999-05-01
Features: With the development of foreign economic, scientific, and cultural exchanges, a large number of people from China go abroad every year, many of whom visit, study, or pursue academic research in the United States. The social systems of China and the United States are fundamentally different, and their cultural backgrounds are also vastly distinct. For those who visit, study, or travel to the United States for the first time, living, studying, and working in an entirely unfamiliar environment can be quite challenging. This book aims to help visitors, family members, and students going to the United States understand American society, culture, and economy, quickly overcome cultural differences and language barriers, and successfully complete their missions in the U.S. The book covers topics such as an overview of the United States, cultural background knowledge, an introduction to higher education, daily English conversations, and essential tips for visiting, family visits, and studying in the U.S. The appendices include introductions to hundreds of major universities in the United States, a mini dictionary of U.S. history and geography, as well as necessary procedures and forms for traveling to the U.S. For the convenience of readers, the main text of this book is arranged in a bilingual English-Chinese format. Most of the English sections in the main text are selected from publications in the United States and other regions overseas, representing authentic American English. With this book in hand, readers can not only learn American English but also gain essential knowledge about the United States. The Chinese sections of the book are translated and proofread into standard Mandarin Chinese by domestic translators. During the selection, editing, and translation process, we have paid attention to the readability, practicality, and thoughtfulness of the book. Since most of the content is primarily selected from publications in the United States and other regions overseas, some passages may still carry the personal perspectives of the original authors. This does not mean we endorse the views of the original authors, and we believe readers can make their own correct judgments.
