How often should a woman change her IUD after having it inserted?

Patient's question:

I have had my baby for a year now, and I want to get an IUD. However, I feel quite sad about it. I heard that after getting an IUD, it needs to be replaced as well. I also don't know if women need to change their IUD every two years.
What kind of help is needed: Do women need to change their IUD every two years?

Doctor's answer:

It's not scary to get an IUD. You can get it inserted 3-7 days after your period, as long as there's no gynecological inflammation. How long you can keep an IUD depends on the material inside it. If it's a trapezoidal IUD, which is a commonly used type of IUD, the insertion time is generally 5-7 years. There's one exception called Mirena, which has an insertion time of 5-8 years. Another exception is the copper T, which has an arched shape and is made of stainless steel wire, with copper wire inside. This type of IUD can be inserted for 20 years, and it doesn't need to be removed within that period.
