Normal amount of amniotic fluid in late pregnancy

Patient's question:

Am I 36 weeks pregnant with 7.8 cm of amniotic fluid, is it normal? The placenta is mature at level 2. This is my second pregnancy. My first baby was born at 36 weeks. My first child was born on May 1, 2017. The doctor suggested I be hospitalized and take medication, but I don't want to be hospitalized now. Can I wait until the baby starts moving before being hospitalized?

Doctor's answer:

In the late stage of pregnancy, an amniotic fluid index below 8 is defined as oligohydramnios, and your current amniotic fluid is not much, but it is still sufficient. If you had a premature birth with your first child, the likelihood of premature birth with your second child is also higher than the general population. If you can be hospitalized for fetal preservation until full term, that is the best. If you cannot be hospitalized and have no symptoms, you can first go home to await delivery, but at home you must drink more water, rest more, and avoid engaging in strenuous activities and sexual intercourse. Timely prenatal examinations are necessary, as oligohydramnios can lead to the baby choking in the womb.
