The selected authors are all celebrated prose masters of that era, and the chosen works are carefully curated to reflect the development of their creative journeys. Each volume begins with an extensive critical preface exceeding 10,000 words, providing a brief introduction to the author's life and analyzing and evaluating their artistic characteristics, creative evolution, and influence, in conjunction with the selected prose. The works are annotated with their original publication sources and dates where possible; necessary notes are also included for passages that may be challenging to understand.
Huang Chang is a renowned prose master who has published over 30 prose collections, totaling more than 3 million words, and is widely recognized as a "prose giant with outstanding contributions" in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese prose. The primary feature of Huang Chang's prose is its free and unrestrained style, marked by effortless fluency. Over the course of his long career, he has experimented with nearly every genre of prose—lyric and narrative prose, travel writing, letters, book reviews, critical essays, and social commentary. However, in practice, he never adhered to traditional categorical rules. In his view, "It is very difficult to make strict scientific distinctions in literary matters," and "there has never been a chasm between prose and essays." This volume includes 40 prose pieces from Huang Chang's various periods and genres. His travel writing blends landscapes, geography, and history into a single artistic expression, characterized by effortless mastery and profound erudition. His biographical prose is simple yet profound, adept at revealing characters' personalities through trivial details. His book reviews and social commentaries are spontaneous and insightful, combining wisdom, depth, clarity, and wit.
