Features: Nie Rongzhen, a native of Jiangjin County, Sichuan Province. In 1919, he went to France for study and work. In 1922, he joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League, and the following year, he joined the Communist Party of China. In 1924, he went to the Soviet Union for study. During the War of Liberation, he served as the secretary of the Military Commission of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, the deputy director of the Political Department of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, the political commissar of the First Corps, and the political commissar of the Advance Force of the Central Red Army. He participated in the Long March. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as the deputy commander and political commissar of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, the commander and political commissar of the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region, and the secretary of the Jin-Cha-Ji Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. During the War of Liberation, he served as the commander of the North China Military Region, the second secretary of the North China Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the chief of staff of the People's Revolutionary Military Commission, and the commander of the Beiping Garrison District. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the mayor of Beijing, the deputy vice chairman of the People's Revolutionary Military Commission, the deputy chief of staff and acting chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, the deputy premier of the State Council and the head of the Central Science Group, the director of the State Commission for Science and Technology, the director of the Commission for National Defense Science and Technology, and the deputy chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China. In 1955, he was awarded the rank of Marshal. He was the vice chairman of the , second, and third Defense Commissions, the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Fourth and Fifth National People's Congresses, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in the seventh term, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China in the eighth term, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in the ninth and tenth terms, and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China in the eleventh and twelfth terms.
