Features: "Mr. Cai's book, from a literary perspective, can only be considered mediocre. But, it is a mine, towering like a mountain, with lush forests, flowing springs and waterfalls, containing coal, iron, gold, and jade. Naturally, there is also soil, and inconspicuous sand and stones. Its extraordinary quality lies in its rich reserves. As mentioned earlier, it was not born out of obedience to orders or reviews, but was born in time. During the collapse of the feudal system and the turmoil of the new era, he devoted his life to composing this epic, which can be heard as a dirge, or seen as a talisman for the birth of the new era. From a practical significance perspective, its vitality is still growing. How many people today can read the traditional Chinese character editions of the 24 Histories? Not many, even if it's the simplified character version of the classical texts. But our national history must inherit and continue. Reading Mr. Cai's book can guide you into the world of history, and there is no other like it. In this sense, his achievement is truly remarkable."
Cai Dongfan, a famous historian and novelist of the Republic of China, wrote "The Popular Epics of Chinese History" with the aim of "saving the nation through storytelling." It took him ten years to complete this work, covering the history of China's feudal period from the Qin Dynasty to 1928, comprehensively documenting 2,166 years of history. Renowned for its rich content and well-sourced material, it was highly favored by readers. The writing style of this series combined the format of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and Mao Zonggang's annotations, featuring main text, annotations, and overall summaries, all self-annotated by Cai Dongfan. Through these annotations, he either refuted fictional claims, noted the sources and differences of certain historical materials, provided popular explanations for ancient government systems, laws, geography, artifacts, titles, and even dialects and colloquialisms, or praised or criticized certain characters, all to help readers understand the main text and clarify history.
In terms of selecting and using historical materials, Cai Dongfan primarily relied on "official histories" while also incorporating folk histories and anecdotes. Anything derived from folk histories or anecdotes was supported by additional evidence, and he insisted on "rigorous verification" to ensure accuracy. Due to his strong emphasis on historical authenticity and opposition to fictionalization, this epic, though popular, holds significant historical value.
"The Romance of the Yuan Dynasty" is one of the "Popular Epics of Chinese History." This book narrates the rise and fall of the Yuan Dynasty, from Genghis Khan (Temüjin) unifying the Mongol tribes to Kublai Khan establishing the Yuan Dynasty, and finally to Zhu Yuanzhang founding the Ming Dynasty. The writing is fluent, and the stories are vivid.
