Features: Vegetables are a staple supplementary food in people's daily lives. However, there is a noticeable off-season for vegetable supply in northern regions during August and September. Notably, the 2008 Olympic Games were held in August, making it crucial to ensure a steady supply of vegetables during this period. Bitter melon and loofah are key vegetable varieties that help maintain a continuous supply during the August-September off-season. Additionally, with the deepening reform and opening-up of China, people's living standards have been improving year by year. Some small, traditionally farmed vegetable varieties have gradually gained popularity in the market. They are favored by urban consumers for their rich nutrition, good taste, and strong resistance to adverse conditions, not only enriching the diversity of "vegetable baskets" but also boosting farmers' incomes. Bitter melon and loofah are typical representatives of these popular vegetable varieties. However, as "newcomers" in the vegetable world, the research on their seedling technology, cultivation techniques, and especially storage and processing technology still needs strengthening. Existing techniques also need to be widely promoted and disseminated to farmers. Therefore, we have compiled and written this book based on years of experience in the field and the latest research findings. It focuses on introducing excellent varieties of bitter melon and loofah, seedling technology, plant protection techniques, cultivation and management techniques, as well as storage and processing techniques. We hope this book will provide some assistance to grassroots agricultural technicians and in their production efforts.
