Patient's question:
Please let me know what precautions should be taken after having an IUD inserted? How long can one have sexual intercourse?Doctor's answer:
1. After inserting the IUD, rest for 2 to 3 days and maintain external genital cleanliness. Avoid sexual intercourse and tub baths or showers within two weeks to prevent infection.2. If you experience heavy bleeding, prolonged duration, increased lower abdominal and back pain after inserting the IUD, seek medical attention to determine whether the IUD should be removed or replaced.
3. Normal menstruation will occur after inserting the IUD, but some may experience increased menstrual flow in the first 2 to 3 months and occasional bloody discharge. This usually adjusts within 3 months of insertion and returns to normal naturally.
4. In rare cases, the IUD may fall out along with the menstrual period or stool within 2 to 3 months after insertion. The highest rate of IUD expulsion occurs between 3 and 6 months post-insertion, with more bleeding and infection. Therefore, it is recommended that women have follow-up checks at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after insertion, followed by annual checks thereafter.
5. If you experience short-term amenorrhea or delayed menstruation by several days after inserting the IUD, persistent or intermittent light irregular vaginal bleeding, or lower abdominal pain, it may indicate ectopic pregnancy. Seek immediate medical attention for diagnosis.
6. In the first 2 to 3 days after inserting the IUD, you may experience slight vaginal bleeding or increased discharge, which usually disappears naturally within 3 to 5 days.
