Is it necessary to check HCG after an abortion?

Patient's question:

Doctor: Hello! I had a miscarriage on November 4th. First, medication-induced abortion, then surgical removal. In the first few days after the surgery, there was more bleeding, but later it stopped. Recently, for the past four or five days, the bleeding has been less, sometimes there's none in a day, and sometimes just once a day, very light red. Yesterday, I went to the hospital for a follow-up check and had an ultrasound. The results showed no obvious abnormalities. The doctor said they still need to check HCG. Is it necessary? What's the use of it? Also, the endometrial thickness is about 1.0 cm. Is that normal?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, after a miscarriage, menstruation usually occurs around 40 days, with varying timing. Due to changes in hormone levels in the body and damage to the endometrium during the procedure, most women's menstrual cycles may change post-abortion. Some may experience an increase or decrease in menstrual flow, while others may have delayed periods, and various other changes. After such occurrences, menstrual cycles typically return to normal gradually after about 2-3 cycles.
Recommendation: If menstrual irregularities persist for a long time, it is advisable to visit a hospital for an ultrasound and sex hormone tests. Treatment can then be administered based on the test results.
