The lifespan of a mature egg

Patient's question:

Today morning I went for a vaginal ultrasound and found a mature egg. I had sex with my husband at noon today. Maybe if we have sex in these next two days, can we get pregnant? Is there a chance? Previously, we hadn't had sex for a week because I heard that an egg can only survive for a few hours. We really want to have a child.
Detailed medical history and consultation purpose: Other normal

Doctor's answer:

Normal fertile women ovulate once per month, with the ovulation day occurring approximately 12 to 16 days before the next menstrual period. The egg matures and is released at any time, although the ovary contains 300,000 to 600,000 primordial follicles that can produce eggs, only 400 to 500 follicles develop fully and release eggs in a lifetime. In principle, only one egg is produced and released from one ovary each month, and it quickly enters the fallopian tube to prepare for fertilization. If it encounters sperm, the egg's fertilization ability is strongest within 15 to 18 hours after being released from the ovary and can maintain this ability for about 30 hours. Afterward, the egg begins to degenerate, its fertilization ability rapidly weakens and disappears. Within 12 to 24 hours, it loses the ability to conceive. Therefore, having intercourse three days before ovulation and one day after ovulation may result in pregnancy, which is known as the "dangerous period."
