Sakata was elected as the president of the Japanese Go Association in 1978, serving for eight years. Sakata was a master of Go, with deep calculation, sharp play, keen reflexes, and a talent for seizing opportunities. He often produced brilliant moves in actual play, earning the nicknames "" (razor), "" (fast blade), and "" (expert at saving isolated positions). Sakata wrote extensively throughout his life, and the books in this series are his classic works, the result of his tireless efforts.
