Does pregnancy hydronephrosis affect the fetus?

Patient's question:

I am very scared when this happens. I often have lower abdominal pain and don't know how to solve it, so I came here to consult. Please ask, does kidney stones during pregnancy affect the fetus?

Doctor's answer:

The collecting system of a normal fetal kidney may have mild separation, with a separation diameter reaching 6 millimeters. However, hydronephrosis is diagnosed when the renal pelvis dilation is ≥10 millimeters or there is dilation of the calyces after the gestational age exceeds 30 weeks. Fetal hydronephrosis can be classified as either reversible or irreversible. In reversible hydronephrosis, the width of the hydronephrosis ranges between 1.01 and 1.63 centimeters, with relatively thick renal parenchyma measuring 1.02 to 0.58 centimeters. After birth, changes in the fetal environment lead to the disappearance of the hydronephrosis. It is commonly associated with a large amount of urine filling the fetal bladder or ureteral dysrhythmia caused by certain reasons.
