When is it appropriate to miscarry after pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Menstruation came on the first of December! Tested today and it seems I'm pregnant! Menstruation hasn't come for 18 days! How old do you think the baby is likely to be! When is it appropriate to have a miscarriage! Mechanical or medication-induced? Which one is less harmful!?

Doctor's answer:

Medication abortion is most ideal when performed within 49 days of pregnancy. If incomplete miscarriage occurs, it is important to promptly visit a local hospital's gynecology department for a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) to prevent excessive bleeding duration or volume, which could interfere with health. Medication abortion works by using drugs to cause the uterine lining to degenerate and become inflamed, soften the cervix, and simultaneously contract the uterus to expel the embryo outside the body. Medication abortion is relatively less harmful. If it is not completely effective, a D&C is still required. Surgical abortion can be performed under anesthesia, and it is completed once you wake up.
