How long does it take to check sperm quality?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, because I want to have a child now, my wife insists on going to the hospital for a pre-pregnancy check-up first. I noticed that there is a semen test in the check-up, and I've never had this kind of test before. I wanted to ask here first, how long do I need to maintain for the semen quality test? How should I get the test done?

Doctor's answer:

Standard semen analysis is an important method for assessing male fertility and serves as an experimental basis for diagnosing urological diseases and monitoring treatment efficacy. The results of a standard semen analysis are typically available within three to four hours, while semen analysis results take about an hour to be ready. Men are advised to abstain from sexual activity for five to seven days before the examination. For pre-pregnancy and prenatal health checks, it is recommended that both partners undergo the test simultaneously.
The examinee should refrain from frequent ejaculation for a period of time and then abstain from sexual activity for 5 to 7 days (with the interval between the last ejaculation and sample collection being at least 100 hours). Prepare a clean, dry, and wide-mouthed container with a lid. Ejaculate the semen through masturbation into the container, ensuring all semen is collected. Cover the container, record the time of sample collection, and keep it close to the body to maintain warmth. Deliver the sample to the laboratory within 30 minutes and provide the collection time to the technician.
Standard Semen Analysis Observations:
- Total semen volume (milliliters)
- Sperm motility
- Sperm concentration (sperm per milliliter)
- Semen liquefaction time (time from sample collection to liquefaction)
- Non-motile sperm (sperm per high-power field)
