Does a boyfriend with vaginitis need treatment

Patient's question:

I have vaginitis and am currently being treated. Does my boyfriend need to be treated since he has no symptoms? What kind of medication should he take?

Doctor's answer:

If you are the boyfriend of a woman with bacterial vaginosis, you don't need to be treated together. Generally, trichomoniasis and candidiasis require treatment for both partners. Bacterial vaginosis can be treated with metronidazole, usually taken under a doctor's guidance for about a week. The vagina can be treated with metronidazole suppositories.
Advice: Avoid sexual activity during the medication period. About a week after stopping the medication, you can schedule a gynecological internal examination and a routine vaginal discharge test to check on your recovery.
