What are the routine tests for semen?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, I would like to ask what are the items checked in a routine semen analysis? How long does it take to get the results of a semen test? Because it has been a year since I got married, and I don't have any children. I would like to do a related semen test this weekend, but I don't have much time. What are the items checked in a routine semen analysis?

Doctor's answer:

1. Sperm volume check: Normal sperm volume per ejaculation is 2 to 5 milliliters. Less than 1.5 milliliters or more than 8 milliliters is considered abnormal. However, sperm volume is closely related to the frequency of ejaculation. If the interval between ejaculations is short, the amount of sperm expelled per ejaculation will decrease.
2. Sperm color check: Normal color is grayish-white or slightly yellowish. If the sperm appears milky white or yellowish-green, it indicates inflammation in the male reproductive tract or accessory glands. If pink, red, or red blood cells are visible under a microscope, it indicates hematospermia.
3. Liquefaction time check: Normal sperm in men will liquefy spontaneously within 5 to 30 minutes. If the liquefaction time is prolonged or the sperm does not liquefy, it is considered abnormal.
4. Acid-base check: The general pH value is 7.0 to 8.0. Both overly acidic (pH value less than 7) and overly alkaline (pH value greater than 8.0) conditions significantly reduce sperm vitality.
