Features: Compton's Encyclopedia is one of the best-selling and most renowned sets of encyclopedias in the United States. Since its first publication in early 1922, it has been continuously updated and has gained widespread popularity among readers, earning praise as a household reference book that is both easy to understand and engaging. The 1994 edition consists of 26 volumes, divided into the main text and an index of facts. It includes over 10,000 exquisite illustrations and approximately 17 million words in Chinese translation. The main text comprises 25 volumes, containing 5,700 entries, all carefully selected and written by experts in their respective fields, then refined by writers and editors. Important entries, ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands of words, are essentially comprehensive and concise articles or pamphlets introducing a particular subject or area of knowledge. The index of facts is the last volume of the set, featuring 28,500 entries that provide brief introductions to various factual content. Our institution plans to compile this part separately after the main text is completed. Readers who refer to it in conjunction with the main text entries can obtain further information. Compton's Encyclopedia is primarily aimed at teenagers and individuals with intermediate education levels from all walks of life. Its writing style seeks to blend knowledge, science, and entertainment, making it easy for readers to enter the realm of knowledge. Our institution signed an agreement with Compton Knowledge Publishing after acquiring the Chinese translation rights to the 1994 edition. We then listed it as a key publishing project within the institution and successfully applied for it to be recognized as a national key book, ultimately incorporating it into the Nineth Five-Year Plan for publishing. To ensure the quality of the compilation and facilitate systematic reading or reference, as well as to cultivate readers' interest in certain disciplines or fields, rapidly expand their scientific knowledge, and enhance their overall competence, we invited hundreds of experts, scholars, and editors from research institutions, teaching organizations, and publishing companies such as the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and the Chinese Encyclopaedia Publishing House to participate in the compilation. During the process, 83 entries related to China were removed, some lengthy entries on the United States and Canada were appropriately shortened, and the original entries in the main text, which were arranged in alphabetical order in English, were rearranged into thematic categories based on major disciplines. The set is divided into five volumes: Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Social and Social Sciences, Technology and Economics, and Culture and Sports. Each volume is a standalone book, allowing readers to purchase individual volumes or the complete set according to their needs. The Culture and Sports volume of Compton's Encyclopedia covers topics such as linguistics, publishing, printing, books, newspapers and magazines, literature, drama, film, music, dance, painting, sculpture, photography, architectural craftsmanship, design and decoration, education, sports, and leisure activities. Reading this book can enhance readers' cultural and sports literacy and improve their overall quality.
