The book pairs 100 masters from the history of world photography, compares them based on their main characteristics, tells their life stories, reveals the mysteries of their creativity, comments on the reasons for the success of their works, and discloses the historical and contemporary value of photography. 4 categories of photography, 50 insightful critiques, 100 masters' life journeys, and 300 classic works. The book is divided into four major categories: Documentary, Landscape, Fashion, and Self-Portrait.
Documentary is the most fundamental feature of photography. Broadly speaking, the release of a camera's shutter is a process of recording visual images. However, the documentary here primarily refers to social documentary, meaning the pure recording of real-life social reality by photographers, aiming to reveal the direction of social development and preserve visual archives of human survival. From the early 20th-century masters such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen to the outstanding journalists of Magnum Photos in the late 20th century, the trajectory of human existence has been thoroughly captured through the lens, forming a 20th-century visual chronicle. Comparing the works of these photographers is like browsing through the annals of world events, often leaving one "shocked and moved."
Since the birth of photography, landscape has always been a favorite subject of photographers. Whether used as a tool for geographical exploration, like early American Western photography, or as a medium for pure aesthetic light and visual beauty—the dialogue between nature and humanity has continued in the lenses of photographers, both refining their character and leaving behind numerous texts of natural landscapes. However, since the great American photographer Ansel Adams pioneered the grand hall of black-and-white landscape photography, it has seemed difficult for later generations to surpass his classic examples, leaving many mysteries in landscape photography. Here, urban landscapes with humanistic characteristics are also included to expand the scope of landscape photography and offer more inspiration.
Photography and fashion have always been inseparable. Compared to other art forms, perhaps only photography technology, which keeps pace with the rapid development of high technology, can match the pace of fashion changes. On one hand, photography records the progress of fashion with its unique sensitivity; on the other hand, it also promotes the advancement of fashion from different perspectives. Countless outstanding photographers have played important roles in this, adding vibrant colors to the sky of fashion. These fashion photographs not only depicted the aesthetic styles of human life at the time but also anticipated the future trends of human aesthetics, leaving behind many thought-provoking memories… even after a century, their charm remains undiminished. Comparing the styles of fashion photography by different photographers is indeed a delightful experience.
Of course, the function of photography goes far beyond this. Especially as an increasingly convenient artistic tool, many people prefer to use photography as a medium for self-affirmation. Through photography, they record themselves, their families, and friends, leaving behind enigmatic personal chronicles. In such a visual chronicle, these outstanding photographers either direct their lenses at themselves, using the popular self-portraiture style to reveal once-private scenes to the public, catching people off guard; or they focus on their families and friends, turning their immediate surroundings into a space for public reading, capturing the journey of human emotions in fleeting light and shadow; or they project their inner thoughts onto photographic paper through surreal images, weaving absurd and legendary stories.
Of course, the categorization in the book is not absolute, especially with many cross-genre comparisons that are difficult to strictly define. We simply hope to bring new insights through comparisons, disclose the historical and contemporary value of photography, and complete a delightful journey through over 300 classic works.
