Landscape painting is one of the three major painting genres in China, referring to paintings that take natural scenery of mountains and rivers as the main subject, abbreviated as "landscape." It originated in the Jin Dynasty, primarily featuring green-and-blue landscapes, and became an independent genre by the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Wu Daozi pioneered ink and wash landscape painting, and in the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty, the Northern and Southern Schools emerged, emphasizing harmonious composition, ethereal and profound artistic conception. By the Northern Song Dynasty, literati often used landscape painting to express their emotions and seek artistic interest, resulting in numerous masterpieces. Wang Shimin's "Landscape Painting" exhibits skilled brushwork, graceful vitality, and a rich yet refined style; Shi Tao's "Eight Famous Views of Huangshan" features a clear and elegant structure, a light and ethereal brushwork, and refined ink and wash techniques; Xu Gu's "Water Bridge and Flowing Water" showcases blurred yet expressive lines, light and elegant colors, and a spiritual and tranquil atmosphere.
