Features: In structural engineering, randomness primarily originates from the incomplete controllability of loads, material properties, and the structural construction process. Employing probability theory to intelligently reflect this nature has formed the fundamental concept and theoretical framework of structural random system analysis. Structural reliability analysis is an integral part of this framework. The probability or reliability index that reflects the likelihood of a part or the entire structure failing to meet certain predetermined functional requirements indicates the relative safety level of the structure. Structural reliability analysis has been widely applied in fields such as structural design, safety evaluation of existing structures, and decision-making analysis for major engineering projects. Over the past three decades, with the joint efforts of scholars from various countries, research on structural reliability methods has achieved significant theoretical and applied results. Among these, the outstanding contributions of Dittelefson and Meddison are particularly noteworthy. In early studies, they proposed concepts such as the general reliability index and the boundary method for system reliability. After the 1990s, they conducted research on engineering decision-making based on reliability, achieving many important results. At the same time, they dedicated themselves to promoting the development of codes that directly use reliability methods in structural design. The philosophical reflections, modeling perspectives, analytical methods, and engineering practices of them and modern scholars abroad have been profoundly and comprehensively elaborated in their co-authored book, "Structural Reliability Methods."
