Later, Chiyou committed suicide after being defeated in the Zhuolu Plain, and the blood sprayed from the broken skull turned into a purple and red mist, soaring into the sky. From then on, a comet resembling a battle flag often swept across the sky, which later generations called the Chiyou Banner. Xuanyuan was then declared emperor and known as the Yellow Emperor. All tribes in the world submitted to Xuanyuan, and their descendants began to call themselves descendants of Yan and Huang. But some of Chiyou's tribesmen, refusing to surrender even to death, fled southward and continued to oppose Xuanyuan, passing down their lineage from generation to generation, forever remembering that their ancestors were Chiyou. These tribesmen were later known as the Miao people.
