What is painting? It is the spirit. A History of Chinese Painting chronicles the changes and development of Chinese painting from ancient times to the present. The naive and vibrant paintings of the Three Dynasties, Spring and Autumn, Warring States, Pre-Qin, and Han periods are said to embody profound virtue, like an infant; the rich and lustrous works of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, and Tang dynasties; the lofty and exquisite creations of the Five Dynasties and Song and Yuan dynasties; and the lingering charm of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Chen Shizeng, like depicting a painting, integrates the spirit and artistic principles, creating a long scroll of Chinese painting that is full of interest and profound depth. Additionally, discussing the historical evolution of figures, flowers, and landscapes in Chinese painting adds a touch of brilliance. Painting cannot be separated from the context of history, yet it possesses its own intrinsic qualities. Chen's theories on painting, both descriptive and analytical, often reveal what previous scholars had not, and his writings fully capture the essence of Chinese painting. Though this overview is brief, it serves as a gateway to understanding.
