Features: This book is written based on the fundamental teaching requirements and content of the "Basic Principles of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering" course, approved by the Third and Fourth Meetings of the National Professional Guidance Committee for Water Supply and Drainage Engineering. It serves as a textbook for water supply and drainage engineering majors in higher education institutions. "Basic Principles of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering" is a professional foundational course in the newly formulated teaching plan for water supply and drainage engineering majors in higher education institutions. It comprehensively expands and integrates previously separately offered civil and hydraulic courses such as "Introduction to Civil Engineering" and "Structures of Water Supply and Drainage Engineering" to meet the evolving demands of talent knowledge structures in the 21st century. For a long time, water supply and drainage engineering was confined to the scope of public utilities, but this has continued to fall short of addressing the significant impacts of rapid socioeconomic development on water scarcity and increasingly severe water pollution, which threaten the sustainable development of the national economy and people's livelihood. Therefore, broadening the scope of water supply and drainage engineering and resolving water-related challenges in socioeconomic development to ensure the sustainable utilization of water resources is imperative. This book consists of four parts: Engineering Materials, Structures and Construction of Buildings and Structures, Structural and Member Design, and Foundations, forming a complete system. The classroom teaching is arranged for 42-50 hours, and the specific teaching hours and content can be adjusted according to the actual teaching plans of each institution. For practical components not covered, it is hoped that each institution can arrange them based on its own conditions to enrich students' knowledge depth. The book includes an introduction and four main chapters: Engineering Materials (7 sections), Structures and Construction of Buildings and Structures (9 sections), Structural and Member Design (10 sections), and Foundations (7 sections). Each chapter is followed by review questions.
