Features: Tom Clancy's best-selling military series, co-authored by a renowned military writer and the "Desert Storm" general, revealing the secrets behind the founding of the United States Special Operations Forces for the first time. This is Tom Clancy's third non-fiction military work, a co-authored with Carl Stiner, a former commander of the U.S. Special Forces and a retired lieutenant general. The book provides a detailed introduction to the birth and development of U.S. Special Forces, as well as many major military operations they have participated in. It offers insights into the recruitment, selection, training, and leadership systems of U.S. Special Forces.
During World War II and the Vietnam War, U.S. special forces had already begun to play a unique role, but the U.S. military had long regarded these combat "elites" as outsiders, dismissing their unconventional combat methods as "circus tricks." However, in 1980, after 53 Americans were taken hostage in Tehran, Iran, the U.S. military realized that traditional military operations, which assumed the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as adversaries, were entirely incapable of dealing with the new global threat of terrorism. From then on, the fate of special forces changed dramatically, as they began to take center stage in history and gradually became key participants in major political and military events.
The book primarily revolves around the military career of General Carl Stiner: starting in the 1950s as the beginning of his special forces career, his service as a "green beret" in Vietnam, the secret missions he organized and participated in across the Middle East, and his eventual rise to become the commander of U.S. Special Forces. Based on General Stiner's personal experiences, the book reveals the true details of many major historical events, such as the clashes between U.S. Special Forces and North Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War, the detailed process of the U.S. invasion of Panama and the overthrow of General Noriega, the 1985 Achile Lauro hostage crisis, and the military operations involving U.S. special forces during the 1990 Desert Storm.
