The book, titled "Explorations in Artistic Beauty," gathers most of the author's short essays on this subject written over the past two decades. It includes the following aspects: first, unfinished drafts of a book. Second, prefaces for some books. Third, critiques of classical literary works and explorations of aesthetic categories. This is what is collected in "Literary and Artistic Sketches" and some chapters in "Painting and Calligraphy Art Fragments." These were written by the author in his spare time while compiling books. This is a collection of short essays, with each piece ranging from over a thousand to two thousand words, and some from over two thousand to three thousand words. However, there are also three essays that are over seven thousand to eight thousand words long, which are included at the end of this book. Why were these three long essays included? First, the writing style of these three essays is in prose, making them neither lengthy nor dull to read. Second, the content of each essay is divided into several aspects, each with relative independence, making them essentially short essays. "Three Characters in Dream of the Red Chamber" explores "the Mad and Obsessed Jia Baoyu," "the Aloof Lin Daiyu," and "the Wise Xue Baochai," and can be considered three interconnected short essays. Of course, what is more important is that these three essays are all explorations of the realm of artistic aesthetics.
