Persistent right umbilical vein non-drainage in the fetus

Patient's question:

I got married last year. Recently, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, especially during my period. I'm very worried about it affecting fertility, and I'm also extremely sensitive to cold and coldness. What does it mean if the fetal right umbilical vein does not empty persistently?

Doctor's answer:

The fetus initially has two umbilical veins directly connecting to the venous sinus and hepatic sinus. The development of the liver causes the right umbilical vein to regress, but the left umbilical vein does not regress. If the right umbilical vein does not regress while the left umbilical vein does regress, it forms persistent right umbilical vein. A few right umbilical veins can directly connect to the inferior vena cava or right atrium bypassing the liver, causing poor liver development.
