Editor's Recommendation: This book is about Beijing, so Mr. Zhang Cheng and I thought about following the usual practice of having a well-known figure write a preface. However, this wasn’t a difficult task for me—I’m a journalist who spends my days immersed in society, meeting many celebrities and famous figures. A simple bow, a favor, and I could ask them to write a preface and praise the book. Who wouldn’t give me a favor? But then again, having a celebrity write a preface always carries the risk of appearing to leverage their fame for self-promotion—like a vendor selling her own produce. That doesn’t seem quite right.
