It is worth mentioning that the compilation of this book received support from several elderly writers. The literary giant Ba Jin, while ill, solemnly entrusted his daughter, Li Xiaolin, to select his works. Li Xiaolin, with Ba Jin's consent, submitted an essay titled "In Memory of Comrade Lao She" and also sent a photo that Ba Jin was particularly satisfied with. Mr. Shi Zhicun, at the age of 96, offered valuable suggestions on both the selected essays and photos. Mr. Wang Yuanhua provided a batch of recent works for the editorial committee to choose from. Mr. Xu Zhongyu sent his works early on and wrote an enthusiastic letter to the editors, reminding them of the selection matters. Since the 1980s, the New Period's prose creation has entered an unprecedentedly vibrant and prosperous phase, naturally bringing about new achievements in prose. The 102 representative works collected in Shanghai Writers' Prose: 100 Pieces vividly and diversely reflect their spiritual demeanor and writing styles.
Wang Mian and Wu Chunrong are both prolific authors, having published prose collections such as Eternal White Butterfly, Mutton and Liquor, The Language of Nature, and Gathering Pearls of Wisdom. The two essays selected for this book are their masterpieces.
