How to avoid molar pregnancy

Patient's question:

Six months ago, I had a D&C procedure for a molar pregnancy. Now I'm three months pregnant, and the doctor said the fetus isn't absorbing nutrients and may miscarry.

Doctor's answer:

HCG in the blood is a tumor marker for gestational trophoblastic disease. After the patient clears the molar pregnancy, blood tests should be conducted every two weeks to track whether the HCG levels gradually decline to normal and no longer rise. Once this condition is met, the frequency of checks can be reduced to once a month. After continuously monitoring for six months, the frequency can be extended to every two months until the one-year period is completed. During this period, the patient must take oral contraceptives for birth control. Pregnancy can only be attempted again after one year.
