Why is the menstrual period delayed

Patient's question:

On the 18th of last month, I had my period. On the 22nd of this month, it didn't come. I have discomfort in my lower abdomen, but I haven't had my period. I didn't have any sexual activity from the 18th of last month to the 19th of this month, so pregnancy is ruled out. I had sexual activity on the 20th and 21st of this month. Today, the 22nd, I still haven't had my period. Could these two instances of sexual activity have caused pregnancy? Is my period irregular? It used to be very regular.

Doctor's answer:

Irregular menstruation has many causes, which are typically divided into two major categories in clinical practice: one is functional, such as irregular menstruation caused by endocrine dysfunction; the other is organic, such as conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and endometriosis, which can also lead to irregular menstruation.
Recommendation: Visit a hospital for a check-up and take medication accordingly. In your daily diet, consume more foods that boost qi and blood, or traditional Chinese medicine herbs for regulating menstruation, such as angelica sinensis (Danggui), astragalus (Huangqi), and Leonurus cardiaca (Yimucao). Drink plenty of water, reduce the intake of spicy and irritating foods, pay attention to a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise. Wishing you good health.
