Features: Pan Boying (1903–1966), born in Huaining, Anhui. His original name was Shi, styled Boying, and known by the pseudonyms Fu Gong, Youfa Weng, and Quequ Weng, with the sobriquet Guyun. In his early years, he studied classics, literature, and calligraphy under Wu Kansheng. During the Sino-German peace talks, he served as the secretary to Zhang Shizhao, the Kuomintang representative. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the Deputy Director of the Shanghai Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Carving Research Association and a professor at Tongji University. He had great proficiency in literature and wrote various novels. Later, he devoted himself to poetry and calligraphy. He was one of the active admirers of the calligraphic style of the "Two Wangs" in modern calligraphy. He authored works such as Chinese Calligraphy, A Brief Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy, and Xuanyinlou Poetry.
The Great Seal of the Yin Fu Jing is traditionally attributed to the Tang Dynasty calligrapher Chu Suiliang, a true in regular script, consisting of ninety-six lines and four hundred sixty-one characters. The ancients praised this piece as "[possessing mighty brushwork and an ancient, (dàndàn) atmosphere]." Pan Boying had an extremely deep understanding of Chu Suiliang's style, thoroughly studying his works and extensively practicing all of Chu Suiliang's calligraphic pieces. His rendition of the Yin Fu Jing captures both the form and spirit, deeply embodying the essence of Chu's calligraphy. This is his ninth version, which, while remaining faithful to the original, incorporates his own interpretations and insights. As a result, it is more accessible than the original and reveals the characteristics and principles of Chu's calligraphy, serving as a model for future learners.
