Features: Wood Protection is a national unified textbook and key national textbook suitable for the cultivation of talents in wood science and engineering and related fields in the 21st century. This book discusses China's forest resources and their rational and efficient utilization; the relationship between wood, humans, and the environment; and environmental pollution and purification in wood protection. It focuses on explaining the biological characteristics of wood, scientific storage of wood; the basic concepts, mechanisms, treatment methods, and spectroscopic analysis techniques of wood preservation, wood pest control, wood fire retardancy, wood strengthening, and improving the dimensional stability and weather resistance of wood.
Excerpt: China is one of the richest countries in bamboo resources, with 99 categories, 40 genera, and over 400 species. The bamboo forest area is approximately 3.8 million hectares, with a total stock of 42.973 billion stems, and an annual production of over 12 million tons of commercial bamboo materials. Bamboo resources in China are distributed across the country, roughly divided into three major bamboo regions: one is the scattered bamboo region between the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, with main species such as Moso bamboo, Light bamboo, Guizhu bamboo, and Jianzhu bamboo; the second is the mixed scattered and clumping bamboo region along the Yangtze River and the Nanling Mountains, dominated by Phyllostachys edulis, with other species including scattered Moso bamboo, water bamboo, Guizhu bamboo, mixed and , and clumping bamboo such as , , and ; the third is the clumping bamboo region in southern China, with main species such as, , , , , and . China's bamboo processing industry has developed various bamboo-based products, including bamboo strand board, bamboo fiber board, bamboo chip board, bamboo-woven glued board, bamboo glued board, bamboo laminated board, bamboo-wood composite board, bamboo (inlaid) flooring, and bamboo formwork. There are also bamboo chopsticks, bamboo mats, bamboo toothpicks, and bamboo shuttles. The development and utilization of bamboo resources in China are of great significance for achieving "bamboo" and "bamboo nurturing wood."
1.1.3 Abundant Economic Forests China has very abundant economic forest resources. Among the 11.28 million hectares of economic forests, there are 6.428 million hectares of woody oil and food forests, 1.504 million hectares of fruit forests, and 0.482 million hectares of special economic forests. Within each category of economic forests, there are numerous tree species, and each species has dozens or even hundreds of varieties, such as jujube, camellia oleifera, chestnut, walnut, and lychee. China's economic forests are widely distributed from south to north and east to west, growing in various types wherever forests are found. They hold a very important position in China's national economy. China's unique economic forests not only have many species but are also mostly native to China. Among the numerous special economic forests, the main tree species include: tung tree, ash tree, tung oil tree, castor oil tree, rubber tree, cork oak, Eucommia ulmoides, tea tree, mulberry tree, prickly ash, star anise, cinnamon, black wattle, wolfberry, and yellow locust tree.
