What is painless childbirth?

Patient's question:

I just got pregnant not long ago, and I've been troubled in my heart during this time. Many people say that giving birth is very painful, and besides the possibility of many unexpected situations happening again, I feel particularly upset because I'm a first-time mother with no experience. The past few days, while chatting with my sisters, they told me that there is now painless delivery, which allows pregnant women to give birth without feeling any pain. What kind of help do you need: What is painless delivery?

Doctor's answer:

Epidural analgesia is not truly painless; it involves administering a small dose of anesthesia when the cervix dilates to three centimeters during the second stage of labor. This reduces the mother's pain while maintaining a slight level of discomfort to keep her aware of contractions. When the cervix is fully dilated, the anesthesia is withdrawn, allowing the mother to give birth. Epidural analgesia can prevent the mother from losing strength during labor due to excessive pain and also reduce her pain. Generally, epidural analgesia does not interfere with postpartum recovery and has minimal side effects.
There are typically two methods for epidural analgesia. The most common approach involves using anesthetics or pain relievers to achieve pain relief. The other method is through prenatal training or acupuncture to reduce labor pain.
