I. Unexplained Mysteries of Emperors
1. Was the Yellow Emperor a legendary figure? Ancient texts mention the concept of the "Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors," among whom the "Five Emperors" include Taikao of the East, Yan Di of the South, Shaohao of the West, Zhuan Xu of the North, and the Yellow Emperor of the Center. In legend, the Yellow Emperor is considered the ancestor of the Chinese nation. However, was he a human or a deity? Why was he called the "Yellow Emperor"? The debate continues to this day, with no unified explanation.
Some scholars believe the Yellow Emperor was a mythological god of thunder and lightning, who later rose to become the central Yellow Emperor. It is said he had four faces and could simultaneously oversee the east, west, south, and north. Nothing that happened anywhere could escape his attention. Later, he defeated the four sky emperors of the east, west, south, and north, establishing his own divine realm. After the Yellow Emperor and Yan Di made peace, their unified tribal alliance became the ancestors of the Chinese nation. That is why modern Chinese people refer to themselves as "descendants of Yan and Huang."
Other scholars argue that the Yellow Emperor was a real historical figure, likely a tribal alliance leader in the late primitive society. The Records of the Grand Historian states: "The Yellow Emperor was the son of Shaodian, surnamed Gongsun, and named Xuanyuan. He was born divine, able to speak from infancy, and grew up to be diligent and perceptive. As a grown man, he was wise. During the time of Xuanyuan, the Shennong dynasty was declining, and the feudal lords were warring, oppressing the people, but Shennong was unable to subdue them. Thus, Xuanyuan practiced warfare and conquered the non-yellow-colored tribes, hence the name 'Yellow Emperor.'" Scholars believe this reflects the ancient people's reverence for the yellow land. Ancient history calls him the "king who ruled by the virtue of earth." Later generations revered the color yellow, turning it into a symbol of power and nobility. The yellow "dragon robes" and "horse jackets" worn by emperors throughout history originated from this tradition.
In Chinese historical records and mythological tales, there are many accounts of the Yellow Emperor. However, due to the passage of time, many of these claims are now unverified. Nevertheless, the Yellow Emperor's status as the ancestor of the Chinese nation is undeniable.
