Features: On April 24, 2004, an academic symposium titled "Construction and Development of Japanese Language Major" was held. In the morning session, Professor Sugu Kōka, President of the China Association of Japanese Language Teaching, delivered a keynote speech titled "Japanese Language Teaching and the Cultivation of Humanistic Spirit." Professor Tan Jinghua, Head of the Japanese Language Teaching Guidance Committee under the Ministry of Education, presented a speech titled "On the Undergraduate Education Curriculum and the Four-Eight Level Tests." Professor Cao Dafeng from the Beijing Japanese Studies Research Center spoke on the topic "Research on Teaching and Textbook Reform in Japanese Major Intensive Reading Courses," delivering an inspiring keynote speech. In the afternoon forum, the heads of the Japanese language departments from Shanghai International Studies University, Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Normal University respectively introduced the construction of their respective disciplines and engaged in lively discussions on the development direction of Chinese Japanese education in the new century, diversification and pluralization of discipline construction, and other related issues. Subsequently, the participants divided into groups for in-depth academic discussions on specialized topics such as teaching philosophy, teaching methods, textbook analysis, and teaching grammar. This proceedings collects most of the papers from the symposium to showcase the outcomes of the conference. Additionally, it includes selected research achievements of faculty members from this department and a brilliant academic speech by Professor Kazumura Akira from the Tokyo Women's College of Fine Arts titled "Language of the Critique Era · Language of Weaving the World — 'Capitalism' Described by Takizō."
