Features: When leaves fall, they will grow back next year. But if my ears are cut off, they won’t grow back. The Life Without Language tells the story of "abnormal" people. The father is blind, the son is deaf, and the daughter-in-law is mute. These three disabled people form a doubly "abnormal" world, yet they strive to live a normal life. In the end, they fail. They cannot communicate with the so-called normal people: they are bullied, mocked, humiliated, stolen from, and even raped. When reading to the end of the novel, it becomes clear that the pursuit of language and normalcy ends in such a result, and even the hardest-hearted people will feel their ice begin to melt. The Life Without Language won the First Lu Xun Literature Prize for Short Story in China. The film adaptation, Lovers from Afar, starring Dong Jie, Tao Hong, and Liu Ye, received the "Best Artistic Contribution Award" at the 15th Tokyo International Film Festival.
