Features: Poplar is one of the important species for afforestation, greening, and industrial timber in China, with artificial poplar forest planting areas reaching 6.67 million hectares. However, poplar pests and diseases are very severe, among which longhorn beetle and canker disease are adverse factors restricting the development of poplar artificial forests. Whether the pathogen of poplar canker disease can cause the tree to become infected depends on the tree's disease resistance strength. Different poplar species exhibit varying levels of resistance to poplar canker disease. Currently, the mechanisms causing this resistance difference are not yet fully understood. Therefore, establishing a molecular genetic map and conducting gene localization for disease and pest resistance quantitative trait loci hold significant theoretical and practical importance for cloning resistance genes in poplar, studying the genetic basis of resistance, and molecular marker-assisted selection.
American poplar belongs to the Populus section of the Salicaceae family and is native to North America. It has no natural distribution in China and was introduced and cultivated from abroad in the early 1970s. The 1980s saw a peak in its introduction and cultivation. Today, American poplar and its hybrids are widely planted across China, becoming important resources for afforestation and breeding in China's forestry industry.
