Fleeting memories, when looking back, the footprints of one's own life are both a moment and a long life! Many events from decades ago have been forgotten. As one's mental faculties decline in old age, thoughts wander freely, recorded as they come. The various people and complex military and political lives encountered in the first half of life are blurred yet vivid, as if they were happening right before one's eyes. Closing one's eyes and reflecting, it's like wandering in a dream, also a joy of late years. From the time in the Attendant's Office, I often accompanied Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling, encountering a wide range of people and events, including the realities of battles and the activities of military and political figures from all sides. Though my knowledge is limited to certain aspects, fragments of the past, it may still contribute to the of history. Now, written from memory, without fabrication, imagination, distortion, slander, or personal bias in praise or criticism; for events and people, I also refrain from arbitrary comments, believing that right and wrong will be judged by future generations.
This book is written by Wang Rizhang, the personal secretary of Chiang Kai-shek, and is a collection of recollections by several of Chiang's bodyguards. It includes contributions from Fu Xi, who once served as the commander of Chiang's guard; Ju Yiqiao, an assistant personal secretary; Sun Zongxian, a bodyguard; and Wang Zhengyuan, a telephone operator. The appendix details all the individuals from Chiang Kai-shek's hometown of Fenghua who served as his bodyguards.
