Am I experiencing a natural miscarriage or the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Patient Age: I had my period on November 3rd, and around December 10th, I used a pregnancy test and got two lines, with the second one very faint. On the evening of December 17th, around 11 PM, I had a slight breakthrough bleeding. The next morning on December 18th, I experienced bleeding with blood clots, similar in amount to my period. I had abdominal pain and then went to the hospital for an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed no gestational sac in the uterus and adnexa, and a weakly positive urine test.

Doctor's answer:

First, the symptoms of natural miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy are both delayed menstruation by several days to over a few tens of days. Both can also present with bleeding symptoms. The symptoms of natural miscarriage are: vaginal bleeding is usually light, bright red in color. If the blood stays in the vagina for a long time, the color will turn brown, often appearing as spotting. The symptoms of ectopic pregnancy bleeding are: vaginal bleeding is usually light, but if the gestational sac ruptures, it can lead to significant internal bleeding in the abdomen, causing shock and life-threatening conditions.
